Detailed description
The pomegranate, Punica granatum, an emblematic fruit of the Mediterranean and Middle East regions, is renowned for its wealth of bioactive compounds. Standardized extracts of pomegranate ellagic acid are particularly appreciated for their antioxidant properties and their contribution to metabolic balance.
Ellagic acid, a polyphenol found in large quantities in pomegranates, is derived from the breakdown of ellagitannins such as punicalagin. These compounds play a key role in protecting cells against oxidative stress, and support the body’s natural detoxification mechanisms.
Studies show that ellagic acid and its derivatives, such as urolithins, also help maintain healthy cardiovascular function, thanks in part to their modulating effects on certain mediators.
In addition to their cardiovascular benefits, ellagic acid-rich pomegranate extracts are being studied for their role in supporting intestinal microbiota and immune function. Their antioxidant action also helps limit oxidative damage linked to ageing and environmental stress.
