Detailed description
Marshmallow Althaea officinalis L. is a herbaceous plant in the Malvaceae family. It is native to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. Since ancient times, the whole plant has been known to soothe the respiratory tract, as well as sore and irritated throats and irritated skin.
Fresh marshmallow root contains large quantities of mucilaginous polysaccharides. These active compounds are thought to be responsible for its soothing and antioxidant action, particularly on the upper airways.
Healing properties have been demonstrated on hydroalcoholic extracts in in vivo studies, for which its flavonoids are thought to be responsible.
